BEYOND THE VIEW: An Expressive Approach to Landscape Painting

Through daily demonstrations, exercises, short lectures, and individual instruction, Anton Pavlenko will share his approach to using the landscape as a visual language for expression rather than the sole subject matter. Moving beyond direct reference,

students will learn to invent and develop original compositions through sketches, using their understanding of nature, design, and visual memory as a framework. Students will also strengthen their understanding of value, color, shape, and brushwork while

learning when and how to intuitively depart from realism in pursuit of more personal interpretations. Building on the groundwork of traditional landscape painting while also pushing the possibilities of paint, the workshop encourages thoughtful editing, bold decision making, and a deeper understanding of how a painting can better communicate mood, memory, and meaning.
